CHOOSING BETWEEN A 1-WICK OR 2-WICK CANDLE? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

CHOOSING BETWEEN A 1-WICK OR 2-WICK CANDLE? WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

At EHF, our range of top-selling luxury candles is available in both 1-wick and 2-wick versions. For first-time customers shopping online, it can be overwhelming to decide between the two options. Which one should you choose? Is one better than the other?

In this article, we will explore the distinctions between 1-wick and 2-wick candles and provide guidance on selecting the ideal option for your needs.

1. BURN TIME

When choosing candles, it is important to consider the burn time for maximum enjoyment. The burn time of a candle is determined by various factors such as the amount and type of wax, shape, and wick type.

Single wick candles generally burn slower than double wick candles, providing a longer burn time under the same conditions. The additional flame from double wick candles can cause the wax to melt faster, resulting in a slightly shorter burn time.

It is a common misconception that 2-wick candles burn twice as hot and rapidly as 1-wick candles. In reality, the difference in burn time is minimal, with 1-wick candles lasting a few hours longer on average. Choose candles with a longer burn time for extended enjoyment.

2. SCENT THROW

The term "scent throw" refers to how a candle's fragrance spreads throughout a space. It encompasses the strength of the scent both before and after the candle is lit, as well as how quickly it permeates the entire room.

Various factors play a role in determining a candle's scent throw, such as the type of wax used, the temperature of the flame(s), and the amount of fragrance oil in the candle. When comparing the scent throw of 1-wick and 2-wick candles, it can be a bit challenging due to these variables.

Generally speaking, a 2-wick candle will have a more robust hot throw compared to a 1-wick candle. This means the scent will be stronger and spread throughout the room more quickly. The dual wicks produce more heat, causing the wax to melt at a faster rate and release fragrance more effectively.

Ultimately, the difference in scent throw between candles depends on how they are crafted. Considering the factors that influence scent throw can help you choose the right candle for your desired fragrance experience.

3. EFFICIENCY

Having multiple wicks helps distribute heat more evenly across larger candles, which leads to a cleaner, more efficient burn with less wastage.

for example, you've probably heard that you should leave a candle burning for at least 1 hour per inch of diameter. This is to achieve a full melt pool, which prevents your candle from tunneling.Ā

In general, a 2-wick candle will reach a full melt pool faster than a 1-wick candle since you have 2 flames distributing heat across a larger surface area. As a result, you don't need to keep a 2-wick candle burning as long as a 1-wick candle.Ā

Plus, double wick candles are less likely to tunnel for the same reason. By getting to a full melt pool each time, it maximizes the burn time of your candle while minimizing wastage (leftover wax).

4. AMBIENCEĀ

Lastly, there's an obvious difference in the visual appearance and overall ambiance. With 2-wick candles, you get two bright flames that produce more light than a 1-wick candle. Ā

Whether or not that's something you want is subjective and depends on the lighting ambiance you're aiming to achieve.

Should You Get a 1-Wick or 2-Wick Candle?

Both 1-wick and 2-wick candles offer unique benefits and limitations. Your choice should align with your preferences and needs.

When faced with a decision between the two options, consider these simplified suggestions.

Get 2-wick candles if:

  • You like to burn your candle for only a few hours at a time over the course of several weeks.
  • You plan to burn the candle in a large room or area, such as a living room or office.
  • You want to set a brighter, more welcoming ambiance.Ā

Get 1-wick candles if:

  • You like to keep your candle burning for long periods of time ranging from several hours to an entire day (albeit trimming your wick every four hours or so).Ā
  • You plan to burn the candle in a small room or area, such as a bedroom, bathroom, or foyer.Ā
  • You want to set a dimmer, more intimate ambiance.Ā

Ultimately, there's no "wrong" choice here so don't feel too distressed if you can't come to a clear decision. Both the 1-wick and 2-wick versions of our Harlem Renaissance-inspired candles will give you the same rich, luxurious fragrance that you're sure to fall in love with!
